From the 1920's in Greenville, South Carolina, to John Hammond, Sr.'s Cafe Society in the 1940's, to their 1974 Grammy-winning collaboration on "Loves Me Like a Rock" with Paul Simon, The Dixie Hummingbirds have been one of gospel's most durable and inspiring groups and are still on the road today led by their lead singer for the last 64 years, Ira Tucker, Sr. Now, The Dixie Hummingbirds are proud to present their 75th Anniversary Album titled "Diamond Jubilation" which features an amazing cast of musicians.
Levon Helm is on drums and Garth Hudson plays accordion, piano and organ. Both are founding members of the quintessential Americana group, The Band. Larry Campbell, the producer of the record, plays guitar, pedal steel, fiddle and mandolin. Larry's name can be found on the records of Sheryl Crow, Willie Nelson, Buddy and Julie Miller, and of course Bob Dylan, with whom he has toured for the last six years. Joining Larry from Dylan's band are Tony Garnier on bass and George Recile on percussion. Rounding out the musicians is Dr. John, who contributes piano on "I've Been Born Again" and Wurlitzer on "When I Go Away."
"Diamond Jubliation" features a mixture of traditional and original songs including the previously unreleased "City Of Gold" by Bob Dylan and "Too Many Troubles" by Julie Miller. The Hummingbirds have toured extensively in Europe, most recently four years ago when they played in Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, and The Netherlands.
In addition to their Grammy in 1974, they have been designated "National Treasures" and are in The Quartet Singing Group Hall Of Fame.
