Galaxies, the original soundtrack to the internationally syndicated planetarium show, which is syndicated by the Hansen Planetarium, the world's foremost distributor of planetarium programming, and is produced by Timothy Ferris, author of the best-selling book, Galaxies (Sierra Club Books).

The vistas of outer space, sonically evoked and evocative - vast, majestic, at once awesome and beckoning, otherworldly yet strangely familiar. Travel through musical starfields. Experience the Milky Way rising over the horizon of an alien world. Look back in time brought present by the ancient light of the eldest stars, eternal witnesses to all the happenings of time and space. And experience the emotions of the traveller. Exhilaration. Awe. Poignant nostalgia, both for home and for unimaginable vistas never to be seen again save in imagination. And a jazzy, joyful return at journey's end.

  • KEVIN BRAHENY's reputation as "one of the finest musicians on the new age music scene today" (Pulse!) rests on the subtle intricacy of his compositions and the sophistication, sensuality, and sensitivity of his sonic palette. Secret Rooms showcases significant growth in both these areas - as well as completely new developments. KEVIN BRAHENY's first two solo albums, Lullaby For The Hearts Of Space (1980) and The Way Home (originally entitled Perelandra [1984]), established his mastery of the serene, extended meditation. On the other hand, reviewers praised his 1988 planetarium soundtrack album Galaxies for the exquisite beauty of its very concise pieces.

While working on Galaxies and Secret Rooms, Braheny also participated in two successful collaborations: Western Spaces (1987), with Steve Roach and RICHARD BURMER, and Desert Solitaire (1989) with Roach and MICHAEL STEARNS. CD Review called the trio "three acknowledged synthesizer masters."

What separates the masters from the masses? Real synth heroes roll their own. Kevin actually builds much of his own equipment and creates all his own samples, often using his "Mighty Serge" modular analog synthesizer. For Secret Rooms, Braheny also built the custom 3-D binaural recording technology for the "Passages" that link the musical pieces. (Try listening to them through headphones to get the fullest effect.)

Secret Rooms unveils Braheny's expanded range as a composer. The brilliant "Shadowcatcher" and "'Til You Get There" represent his first significant rhythmic explorations to date, with ethno-percussion specialist LEONICE SHINNEMAN. Other pieces extend and deepen his trademark warmth, depth, and unerring melodic appeal.

The theme of secret "internal rooms" - hidden emotions, psychic states, spaces in consciousness, each with an individual ambience and identity - conjures up a journey that, in Kevin's words "is about experiencing the different spaces, and then using each experience to move on to the next."

Secret Rooms confirms Braheny's own ability to keep moving on - exploring, expressing, and evolving his singular talent in ever more significant and satisfying ways.

Track Listing
  1. The Way Home
  2. Perelandra
For sheer beauty and music magic, The Way Home has no peer. Shimmering, floating electronics intertwine with ethereal tones of airy flute to result in a journey through the realm of celestial sound. Ð Archie Patterson, Editor, Eurock Magazine

The Way Home is expressive, tender synthesizer music that communes with the deep human yearning for inner peace and contentment. Sonically sophisticated and emotionally refined, The Way Home breathes with profound serenity and heartfelt beauty.

"Perelandra," the companion piece, is inspired by C. S. Lewis's famous science fiction novel. This three-part composition for synthesizers and choral voices evokes the sensual, floating atmosphere of a lush, Venusian paradise.

Kevin Braheny has been active musically since the age of 4, when he began playing piano. Early compositions followed at age 7, and at 11 he took up woodwinds, which became the core sounds of his mature works. He had early ensemble experiences in classical music, jazz, big band, funk, and rock.

In 1971, Kevin discovered the new frontier of electronic music and moved to Los Angeles, where we worked with pioneer Moog synthesist Malcolm Cecil and modular synthesizer inventor Serge Tcherepnin. He built new prototypes for the latter's advanced analog synthesizers and in 1978 assembled "The Mighty Serge," an advanced modular analog system.

"I modified or built my own equipment to insure maximum sonic control and expressiveness," says Kevin. "I try to get inside sounds and work from the inside out. My compositions flow from a sensual experience of sound, but they're designed by my knowledge of form -- and my love, passion, actually, for beauty."

The particularly expressive insturment Kevin plays is the Steiner EWI (electonic wind instrument), which is controlled by the performer's breath and touch. It's an extremely sensitive instrument, immediately responsive to te slightest change in breath or pressure or position of the lips, fingers, or hands. An amateur picking it up is in for a number of surprises! While Kevin characteristically uses it to produce woodwind-like sounds, it also functions as an all-purpose controller, interfacing Kevin and his audience, with a limitless universe of sounds.

Like his instrument, Kevin himself is versatile of mood yet singleminded of intent to express emotion. His brand of new age music includes passion, emotional intensity, and the intent to bring the listener an enhanced experience of self and surroundings.

The Way Home was originally released under the title Perelandra. Other titles by Kevin Braheny on Hearts of Space Records include Lullaby for the Hearts of Space and Galaxies.
