FACES OF THE CHRIST is the soundtrack to an Avalon Productions film of the same name. The CD has four separate compositions with seamless transitions between them. In essence, the soundtrack is one single 59-minute piece. Demby has a reputation for creating and performing deeply spiritual and sacred atmospheres. This soundscape is reverent, dynamic, and triumphant with somber overtones. This is an absolute classic disc for all collectors of electronic music.

Light of this World: The Best of Constance Demby offers a sampler of the music of the "queen of spacemusic" from her 1978 Skies above Skies through the 1986 masterpiece Novus Magnificat; two bonus tracks were written for this compilation album. The title track opens the album, an inspiring and brash pop vocal piece (Demby sounds remarkably like Bette Midler) with female backup vocals, hot drums, electric guitar emulator, and bass. The title track from Demby's 1980 Sunborne also showcases Demby's voice, but in her more cosmic and chantlike mode. The instrumentation is vast -- organ sounds, trap set, piano -- a sound fit for the birth of galaxies. The exhilarating "Flying Bach" from Novus Magnificat features some fancy organ work with sampled chorus and orchestra. "Radiance" from Sacred Space Music offers an organ drone with the sparkling tones of the hammered dulcimer. Overhead, Demby vocalizes like an angel. "The Dawning" from Sunborne showcases Demby's enormous Sonic Steel Instruments, the Space Bass and the Whale Sail. Demby's 1994 live album, Constance Demby at Alaron, is represented by two pieces, "The Chakoor Bird" (on which Demby plays the resonant Chinese cheng) and "Gurudev Aja," an exotic synthesizer piece with drone. Demby's first album, Skies Above Skies, is represented by two devotional prayers, "OmManiPadmeHum" (radiant piano and organ drone) and "God Is" (a mystical work for organ). "Sanctus" ends the album, a radiant new piece brimming with chimes and gongs. None of the pieces here tops seven minutes (the pieces may last to a half hour in the original versions), but I could not sense any had been cut. A lot of albums claim "best of"; this one delivers. Demby is a visionary musician, and this album should whet your appetite for more. -- AMG

Track Listing
  1. Om Mani Padme Hum
  2. Endless
  3. Peace of God
  4. El Mie
  5. St. Francis Prayer
  6. Sant Ji
  7. God Is
Constance Demby, the "queen of symphonic spacemusic," draws from an international palette of musical mysticism on this 1978 spiritual album. Meditative drones from twanging tamboura, noble organ chords, shimmering waves of the hammered dulcimer, and cello overtones overlap to create sonic tapestries, heady settings for seven chants and prayers sung by Demby. The Tibetan chant "Om Mani Padme Hum" offers intoxicating layers upon layers of sounds and voices. The Chinese-flavored "Peace of God," with lyrics by Annie Besant, dances suspensefully between the flittering of the hammered dulcimer and the deeply resonant twang of the Chinese cheng (a koto-like instrument). The Chinese mode is employed again on "El Mie." The "St. Francis Prayer" brings words above the plateaus of the hammered dulcimer. The devotional "Sant Ji" brings in just a touch of synthesizer sweetening to create expansive vistas of heaven; listening is almost like flying. The multi-instrumental Demby plays all the instruments and sings, and the sonic effects are quite an achievement for the synthesizer and overdubbing technology of the time. What makes Skies Above Skies so enduring is Demby's sensitivity toward the "live" sonic vibrations of her voice and instruments and her alignment with the sentiments of the holy prayers. It is like the nectar of profound innocence. --AMG

  • Constance Demby's special talent is translating the tradition of sacred music into a 21st century context. First came Sacred Space Music (1982), then her acknowledged masterpiece and "landmark recording" Novus Magnificat (1986). Now she has given us Aeterna, soaring with expansive, heartfelt piano melodies amidst rich electronic orchestrations and choirs of angelic voices. While Novus Magnificat took its inspiration from the sacred choral music of Bach, Aeterna is inspired by the late-19th century romantics Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky. But with Constance Demby at the electronic podium, the music is propelled beyond earthly confines, combining the rich melodicism of the Russian masters with the sublime aspirations of Bach.

Through much of Aeterna the grand piano sings the dominant voice. In the first piece, "The Dawning," mysterious, churning clouds of sound emerge from silence, giving birth to a gentle melody stated by the piano with elegant simplicity. Woodwinds and strings join in, and the music begins to soar. Soon Demby's electronic orchestra is in full force, transmuting the innocence of the opening theme into a heartfelt expression of affirmation.

Next come the buoyant melodies and cascading piano chords of "Ocean Without Shores" a passionate, tumultuous waltz ending with a virtual tsumani. Courage and optimism then give way to more introspective emotions, and the music settles down with "Innocence." Sparkling chimes ring out over soft mists of sound like stars flickering in the serenity of night. Slow, trancelike Indonesian gamelan rhythms and a plaintive shakuhachi flute weave fluid tones in and around the piano, string instruments converse, and the extended piece builds in intensity while barely moving above a whisper.

"Cry of the Heart," with its descending minor triad, begins an extended exploration of more profound and tragic emotions. Yet for Demby there's always hope: angelic female voices hover like benign guardians above even the most sorrowful lament, and grief transforms into acceptance.

In "Eternal Return," piano and strings reappear, guitar and clarinet express an elegant loneliness, and the final symphonic chorus brings a message of hope and renewal. The final three-movement suite "Rites of Passage," shows Demby at the peak of her compositional powers with a powerful concerto for piano and electronic orchestra on the themes of remembrance and fulfillment, leaving the listener with a profound sense of serenity the aftermath of an intensely emotional journey.

Sets a standard for the use of electronics against which future new age albums should be judged. - John Schaefer, WNYC-FM New Sounds (Harper & Row, 1987)

"Composed in 1986, Novus Magnificat was greeted with immediate critical and popular acclaim. As it approaches sales of 100,000 units, it has come to be considered one of the benchmark examples of the finest the new age music genre has to offer.

Billed by Constance Demby as "a contemporary Magnificat and Exaltate for digital orchestra and choral voices," Novus is an inspired fusion of influences from traditional sacred and classical music set in a contemporary electronic ambience.

Ms. Demby composed and performed all the musical elements in her own 16 track studio using a combination of digital samplers and conventional synthesizers; additional electronic images and effects were contributed by Los Angeles synthesist, film composer and Hearts of Space labelmate MICHAEL STEARNS. The work was produced by Constance Demby and Anna Turner, with additional engineering by Warren Dennis, and mixed by Stephen Hill and Warren Dennis.

Subtitled Through the Stargate, the music charts a lengthy but resolute course toward a powerful emotional/spatial release at the apotheosis of Part 2, then recedes gently to the subtlest of contemplative sounds. Rather than taking us away from ourselves, the music leads inward, in an atmosphere of awe, reverence, aspiration, and joy.

Considered "a first-rate album by an artist in her prime," Set Free deserves a place next to the Grammy-nominated, award-winning classic, Novus Magnificat. Traveling even deeper into intensely moving electronic soundscapes, this "extraordinary release features rhythmic influences that are unabashedly ritualistic and celebratory in nature." There is, in this music, a "visionary force, an internal dynamic and purity, and immense feeling." As a pioneer in her genre, Demby has not forgotten her roots, as the last four tracks create a majestic celestial voyage for inner travelers."

Constance Demby was one of the founding figures of New Age music with her masterpiece, Novus Magnificat. Her subsequent body of work has defined space music and her compositions are used everywhere from planetariums and films to new age locations and compilations. This is Constance's first new record in two years and follows her best selling Sanctum Sanctuorum. The album includes songs from the soundtracks of two films: "James Dean - An American Legend" and "I Am".
